CALL FOR ENTRY

Because I didn’t win the 1001 Cover Concept competition (I entered under my girlfriend’s name), didn’t get the car, didn’t get the MacBook, didn’t get the Digital Studio vouchers – and plain bitter that the selection process is suspicious, questionable, and suspect to deliberate bias, favoritism, and subjective preferences – I hereby announce the call for entry for the 1300 KOVER KONSEP: Ekspresi Kreatif! Ekspresi Chaos!

This competition pays homage to the 1300 entries that were dropped on Concept’s door, but only 100 of those were selected mysteriously (by the committee, or by some of the jury, who knows?), then, to be judged by the rest of the benevolent jury. Who chose the 100? What qualifies the 100 as selection? We, the participants, all paid a huge amount of entry fee of Rp 100.000,00, for each entry. Therefore, each entry has the RIGHT to be selected by the jury, and not by mysterious circumstances! It’s not fucking Indonesian Idol, buddy!

This mock competition is a counter, protest, intervention to the suspicious and malicious selection process which undermines the democratic value that is the right of all entry to be viewed by the jury!  Yes, I am upset! Yes, I am jealous! Yes, I am a sore loser! But dammit, I’ve seen my friend’s unchosen entry, and I thought he too should’ve been in the top 30 (How do I qualify to determine if he is eligible as a finalist? I hate seniority based on experience and taste. But if you wonder, my experiences are: trained in graphic design ITB 1996-2001, Leboye design 2001-2005 [art director], MA Visual and Critical Studies at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, USA 2005-2007–the number one art school in the US–I think I qualify)!

What the fuck is going on, right? Okay, here are the rules:

1. Yes, there is a theme (unlike the 1001 Concept Competition).
Theme: Globalization, Nationalism, and Cultural Identity! Globalization is upon us whether we want it or not. How should we react to it? What is nationalism? Does cultural identity in an increasingly deterritorialized world matter? I want you to push the limit of 2-D design. Key references: Elliott Earls, Cranbrook, Ed Fella, Rick Valicenti, Designers Republic, Buro Destruct, Tomato, Martin Woodtli, Paula Scher, Stefan Sagmeister, Natasha Jen, Ryan Pescatore Frisk & Catelijne van Middlekoop, Deanna Cheuk, Sheppard Farey, Banksy, Stanley Donwood, and etc. Note: Pixel art is allowed only if the shit doesn’t replicate or appropriate Eboy! This points to you vector junkies out there, watch out MF! Why did I give you key references? Because I’ll know then which artists you ripped off!
2. Size: 21.3 x 30,5 cm (trim); leave a 0.3 cm wide white border around the cover edges–portrait; include cross marks on your print; 72 dpi for email entry.
3. Participants should submit 2 formats of each entry: a jpeg via email and an inkjet or laser print outs for possible exhibition. You are allowed to experiment in printing, embellish any way you want. Let’s redefine what is the magazine cover!?!
4. Software: Any
5. Technique: I regret typing out this category. Creative people shouldn’t be told what technique they need to use.
6. Design your own magazine logo! As long as it reads: K o n s e p
7. Deadline: October 18, 2007!
8. Entry fee: Rp 0,00
9. Send web entry to: ismiaji@gmail.com
Send printed copy to:
Ismiaji Cahyono
Jl Palakali Raya No 15
Depok 16425
Jawa Barat
10. In your email entry please include your name, gender, age, occupation, and the concept (max. 200 words) of your entry! Don’t send me photos of yourself!

This competition is open to any designer/artist who respects individual expression, freedom, and basic human rights.

The winner will be determined by a committee of judges (or not? I’ll open this in a forum. We have the choices of a curatorial process or by vote. Tell me what you think!) The top ten winner will appear in their own individual page in my domain. The rest of the entries will appear collectively in my domain. If luck has it a sponsor might pick it up and print it! We’ll get it exhibited!

Your cover belongs to you, you hold your own copyright and therefore you may replicate and use it in anyway you desire. However, by sending me your entry, you have also agreed to allow me to publish your entry.

Good luck to you all!
